How to Install LVP Flooring Like a Pro

Luxury Vinyl Plank (LVP) is one of the most durable and stylish flooring systems you can install — and when done right, it’s nearly maintenance-free. At Floormasters Group, we install LVP across Victoria and Vancouver Island every week. Here’s how to get professional results that last.

Step 1: Prepare Your Subfloor

Start with a clean, smooth, and level surface. Remove debris, old adhesive, or paint that could affect adhesion. For concrete, verify moisture levels are within spec — typically below 75% RH for most LVP systems.

Floormasters Tip: Apply a moisture-mitigation primer or self-leveling compound for superior bonding and long-term performance.

Step 2: Acclimate the Material

Let your LVP planks sit in the installation area for 24–48 hours. This acclimation period allows them to adjust to room temperature and humidity, minimizing gaps or lifting later.

Step 3: Plan the Layout

Measure the room and snap a chalk line along your starting wall. Stagger plank joints by at least 6 inches for a more natural appearance. Always start from the most visible wall in the room.

Step 4: Cut and Dry-Fit

Use a utility knife or dedicated LVP cutter for clean edges. Cut with the decorative side up to prevent chipping. Dry-fit the first two rows before locking them together to confirm alignment.

Step 5: Lock and Tap

Engage the click-lock system plank by plank. Tap gently with a rubber mallet and tapping block to close joints tightly without damaging the edges. Avoid forcing pieces together — over-pressure can cause buckling.

Step 6: Finishing Touches

Install transition strips and baseboards to complete the perimeter. Maintain a ¼” expansion gap around all walls and fixtures. Clean the floor with a neutral-pH cleaner after installation.

Step 7: Maintain and Protect

Use felt pads under furniture legs, avoid dragging heavy items, and keep grit off the surface. Regular sweeping and light damp-mopping will preserve the finish for years.
