How to Install Carpet Like a Pro

Installing carpet is all about prep, precision, and patience. Whether it’s a bedroom, office, or commercial suite, proper installation ensures comfort, safety, and longevity. Here’s our professional method — the same approach our Floormasters Group team uses across Victoria and Vancouver Island.

1. Prep the Subfloor

Start with a clean, dry, and level subfloor. Remove all old carpet, nails, and debris. Fill low spots and grind down any high areas. Sweep or vacuum thoroughly — dust and grit can prevent the carpet and underlay from sitting properly.

2. Install Tack Strips

Lay tack strips around the room’s perimeter, about ½ inch from the wall. Be sure the angled pins face toward the wall. Cut strips to fit doorways and corners neatly. Wear gloves — those pins are sharp.

3. Lay the Underlay (Padding)

Roll out underlay perpendicular to the direction the carpet will run. Butt the seams tightly (don’t overlap), then staple or tape them down. Trim excess underlay along the tack strips. A quality pad adds comfort and extends the carpet’s life.

4. Position and Cut the Carpet

Unroll the carpet across the room, allowing a few extra inches along each wall. Line up patterns if you’re seaming multiple pieces. Use a carpet knife and straightedge for clean cuts. Leave a bit of excess — you’ll trim it later for a perfect edge.

5. Seam and Join (If Needed)

For larger areas, use seaming tape and an iron to join pieces. Heat the adhesive and press both carpet edges into the molten glue. Roll the seam with a seam roller while warm to lock fibers together.

6. Stretch the Carpet

This is the pro move that separates good from great installs. Use a power stretcher to pull the carpet tight across the room, anchoring it on the tack strips. Then use a knee kicker for corners and final adjustments. Tight, even tension prevents ripples and buckling later.

7. Trim and Finish Edges

Use a wall trimmer or utility knife to cut excess carpet at the walls. Tuck edges neatly between the tack strip and baseboard using a stair tool. Reinstall any doors or transitions and give the carpet a good vacuum to lift the pile.

Pro Tips from Floormasters

  • Acclimate first: Let carpet and pad rest in the room for 24 hours to adjust to temperature and humidity.
  • Use sharp blades: Change your knife blade often for clean cuts and less fraying.
  • Seal the seams: Apply a small bead of seam sealer to prevent unraveling.

With the right tools and patience, DIY carpet installation is possible — but for large or commercial areas, it’s best left to trained installers with stretching and seaming gear.
